God, I’m not trying to rule the roost,
    I don’t want to be king of the mountain.
I haven’t meddled where I have no business
    or fantasized grandiose plans.

² I’ve kept my feet on the ground,
    I’ve cultivated a quiet heart.
Like a baby content in its mother’s arms,
    my soul is a baby content.

³ Wait, Israel, for God. Wait with hope.
    Hope now; hope always!

Psalm 132 – The Message

A Pilgrim Song

^1-5 O God, remember David,
    remember all his troubles!
And remember how he promised God,
    made a vow to the Strong God of Jacob,
“I’m not going home,
    and I’m not going to bed,
I’m not going to sleep,
    not even take time to rest,
Until I find a home for God,
    a house for the Strong God of Jacob.”

^6-7 Remember how we got the news in Ephrathah,
    learned all about it at Jaar Meadows?
We shouted, “Let’s go to the shrine dedication!
    Let’s worship at God’s own footstool!”

^8-10 Up, God, enjoy your new place of quiet repose,
    you and your mighty covenant ark;
Get your priests all dressed up in justice;
    prompt your worshipers to sing this prayer:
“Honor your servant David;
    don’t disdain your anointed one.”

^11-18 God gave David his word,
    he won’t back out on this promise:
“One of your sons
    I will set on your throne;
If your sons stay true to my Covenant
    and learn to live the way I teach them,
Their sons will continue the line—
    always a son to sit on your throne.
Yes—I, God, chose Zion,
    the place I wanted for my shrine;
This will always be my home;
    this is what I want, and I’m here for good.
I’ll shower blessings on the pilgrims who come here,
    and give supper to those who arrive hungry;
I’ll dress my priests in salvation clothes;
    the holy people will sing their hearts out!
Oh, I’ll make the place radiant for David!
    I’ll fill it with light for my anointed!
I’ll dress his enemies in dirty rags,
    but I’ll make his crown sparkle with splendor.”

^1-3 How wonderful, how beautiful,
    when brothers and sisters get along!
It’s like costly anointing oil
    flowing down head and beard,
Flowing down Aaron’s beard,
    flowing down the collar of his priestly robes.
It’s like the dew on Mount Hermon
    flowing down the slopes of Zion.
Yes, that’s where God commands the blessing,
    ordains eternal life.

Psalm 140 – The Message

A David Psalm

^1-5 God, get me out of here, away from this evil;
    protect me from these vicious people.
All they do is think up new ways to be bad;
    they spend their days plotting war games.
They practice the sharp rhetoric of hate and hurt,
    speak venomous words that maim and kill.
God, keep me out of the clutch of these wicked ones,
    protect me from these vicious people;
Stuffed with self-importance, they plot ways to trip me up,
    determined to bring me down.
These crooks invent traps to catch me
    and do their best to incriminate me.

^6-8 I prayed, “God, you’re my God!
    Listen, God! Mercy!
God, my Lord, Strong Savior,
    protect me when the fighting breaks out!
Don’t let the wicked have their way, God,
    don’t give them an inch!”

^9-11 These troublemakers all around me—
    let them drown in their own verbal poison.
Let God pile hellfire on them,
    let him bury them alive in crevasses!
These loudmouths—
    don’t let them be taken seriously;
These savages—
    let the Devil hunt them down!

^12-13 I know that you, God, are on the side of victims,
    that you care for the rights of the poor.
And I know that the righteous personally thank you,
    that good people are secure in your presence.

Psalm 142 – The Message

A David Prayer—When He Was in the Cave

^1-2 I cry out loudly to God,
    loudly I plead with God for mercy.
I spill out all my complaints before him,
    and spell out my troubles in detail:

^3-7 “As I sink in despair, my spirit ebbing away,
    you know how I’m feeling,
Know the danger I’m in,
    the traps hidden in my path.
Look right, look left—
    there’s not a soul who cares what happens!
I’m up against it, with no exit—
    bereft, left alone.
I cry out, God, call out:
    ‘You’re my last chance, my only hope for life!’
Oh listen, please listen;
    I’ve never been this low.
Rescue me from those who are hunting me down;
    I’m no match for them.
Get me out of this dungeon
    so I can thank you in public.
Your people will form a circle around me
    and you’ll bring me showers of blessing!”

Exodus 7:25-8:19 – The Message

^22-25 But the magicians of Egypt did the same thing with their incantations. Still Pharaoh remained stubborn. He wouldn’t listen to them as God had said. He turned on his heel and went home, never giving it a second thought. But all the Egyptians had to dig inland from the river for water because they couldn’t drink the Nile water.
Seven days went by after God had struck the Nile.

Strike Two: Frogs

8 ^1-4 God said to Moses, “Go to Pharaoh and tell him, ‘God’s Message: Release my people so they can worship me. If you refuse to release them, I’m warning you, I’ll hit the whole country with frogs. The Nile will swarm with frogs—they’ll come up into your houses, into your bedrooms and into your beds, into your servants’ quarters, among the people, into your ovens and pots and pans. They’ll be all over you, all over everyone—frogs everywhere, on and in everything!’”

⁵ God said to Moses, “Tell Aaron, ‘Wave your staff over the rivers and canals and ponds. Bring up frogs on the land of Egypt.’”

⁶ Aaron stretched his staff over the waters of Egypt and a mob of frogs came up and covered the country.

⁷ But again the magicians did the same thing using their incantations—they also produced frogs in Egypt.

⁸ Pharaoh called in Moses and Aaron and said, “Pray to God to rid us of these frogs. I’ll release the people so that they can make their sacrifices and worship God.”

⁹ Moses said to Pharaoh, “Certainly. Set the time. When do you want the frogs out of here, away from your servants and people and out of your houses? You’ll be rid of frogs except for those in the Nile.”

^10-11 “Make it tomorrow.”

Moses said, “Tomorrow it is—so you’ll realize that there is no God like our God. The frogs will be gone. You and your houses and your servants and your people, free of frogs. The only frogs left will be the ones in the Nile.”

^12-14 Moses and Aaron left Pharaoh, and Moses prayed to God about the frogs he had brought on Pharaoh. God responded to Moses’ prayer: The frogs died off—houses, courtyards, fields, all free of frogs. They piled the frogs in heaps. The country reeked of dead frogs.

¹⁵ But when Pharaoh saw that he had some breathing room, he got stubborn again and wouldn’t listen to Moses and Aaron. Just as God had said.

Strike Three: Gnats

¹⁶ God said to Moses, “Tell Aaron, ‘Take your staff and strike the dust. The dust will turn into gnats all over Egypt.’”

¹⁷ He did it. Aaron grabbed his staff and struck the dust of the Earth; it turned into gnats, gnats all over people and animals. All the dust of the Earth turned into gnats, gnats everywhere in Egypt.

¹⁸ The magicians tried to produce gnats with their incantations but this time they couldn’t do it. There were gnats everywhere, all over people and animals.

¹⁹ The magicians said to Pharaoh, “This is God’s doing.” But Pharaoh was stubborn and wouldn’t listen. Just as God had said.

8 Господь сказал Моисею:

Они вылезут из реки и придут в твой дворец, в спальню, на постель, в дома твоих приближенных и народа^[a], в твои печи и в квашни. ⁴ Лягушки будут прыгать на тебя, на твой народ и на твоих приближенных».

⁵ Господь сказал Моисею:

– Скажи Аарону: «Занеси руку с посохом над реками, каналами и прудами и наведи лягушек на египетскую землю».

⁶ Аарон занес руку с посохом над водами Египта, и вылезли лягушки и покрыли всю землю. ⁷ Но чародеи с помощью колдовства сделали то же самое. Они тоже навели лягушек на Египет. ⁸ Фараон позвал Моисея и Аарона и сказал:

⁹ Моисей сказал фараону:

Моисей ответил:

Третье наказание: комары

¹⁷ Они сделали так. Аарон поднял руку с посохом, ударил по пыли, и на людей и скот налетели комары. Пыль по всему Египту превратилась в комаров. ¹⁸ Чародеи попытались с помощью колдовства навести комаров, но не смогли. Комары облепляли людей и скотину. ¹⁹ И тогда чародеи сказали фараону:

– Это сделал Бог.

Но сердце фараона оставалось упрямым. Он не послушал их, как и говорил Господь.

Epistle

2 Corinthians 4:7-18 – The Message

^7-12 If you only look at us, you might well miss the brightness. We carry this precious Message around in the unadorned clay pots of our ordinary lives. That’s to prevent anyone from confusing God’s incomparable power with us. As it is, there’s not much chance of that. You know for yourselves that we’re not much to look at. We’ve been surrounded and battered by troubles, but we’re not demoralized; we’re not sure what to do, but we know that God knows what to do; we’ve been spiritually terrorized, but God hasn’t left our side; we’ve been thrown down, but we haven’t broken. What they did to Jesus, they do to us—trial and torture, mockery and murder; what Jesus did among them, he does in us—he lives! Our lives are at constant risk for Jesus’ sake, which makes Jesus’ life all the more evident in us. While we’re going through the worst, you’re getting in on the best!

^13-15 We’re not keeping this quiet, not on your life. Just like the psalmist who wrote, “I believed it, so I said it,” we say what we believe. And what we believe is that the One who raised up the Master Jesus will just as certainly raise us up with you, alive. Every detail works to your advantage and to God’s glory: more and more grace, more and more people, more and more praise!

^16-18 So we’re not giving up. How could we! Even though on the outside it often looks like things are falling apart on us, on the inside, where God is making new life, not a day goes by without his unfolding grace. These hard times are small potatoes compared to the coming good times, the lavish celebration prepared for us. There’s far more here than meets the eye. The things we see now are here today, gone tomorrow. But the things we can’t see now will last forever.

⁷ Но это сокровище мы носим в глиняных сосудах^[a] и показываем, что эта выдающаяся сила исходит не от нас, а от Бога. ⁸ Нас теснят со всех сторон, но мы не стеснены; мы в отчаянных обстоятельствах, но не в отчаянии; ⁹ нас преследуют, но мы не покинуты; мы сильно побиты, но не убиты. ¹⁰ В нашем теле мы всегда носим смерть Иисуса, чтобы в нас была явлена и Его жизнь. ¹¹ Мы, живые, все время предаемся смерти за Иисуса, чтобы и жизнь Иисуса была явлена в наших смертных телах.  

¹² Смерть совершает свою работу в нас ради того, чтобы в вас совершила свою работу жизнь!

¹³ А поскольку мы обладаем тем же духом веры – как написано: «Я верил, поэтому я говорил»^[b], – мы тоже верим и поэтому говорим. ¹⁴ Мы знаем, что Тот, Кто воскресил Господа Иисуса, воскресит с Иисусом и нас и поставит перед Собой рядом с вами.

Жизнь в надежде на небеса

¹⁶ Поэтому мы не унываем. Если даже мы изнашиваемся физически, то внутренне мы изо дня в день обновляемся, ¹⁷ так как наши легкие и временные страдания – ничто по сравнению с весомой и вечной славой, которую они нам приносят. ¹⁸ Мы смотрим не на видимое, а на невидимое, потому что видимое временно, а невидимое вечно.

Mark 10:17-31 – The Message

To Enter God’s Kingdom

¹⁷ As he went out into the street, a man came running up, greeted him with great reverence, and asked, “Good Teacher, what must I do to get eternal life?”

^18-19 Jesus said, “Why are you calling me good? No one is good, only God. You know the commandments: Don’t murder, don’t commit adultery, don’t steal, don’t lie, don’t cheat, honor your father and mother.”

²⁰ He said, “Teacher, I have—from my youth—kept them all!”

²¹ Jesus looked him hard in the eye—and loved him! He said, “There’s one thing left: Go sell whatever you own and give it to the poor. All your wealth will then be heavenly wealth. And come follow me.”

²² The man’s face clouded over. This was the last thing he expected to hear, and he walked off with a heavy heart. He was holding on tight to a lot of things, and not about to let go.

^23-25 Looking at his disciples, Jesus said, “Do you have any idea how difficult it is for people who ‘have it all’ to enter God’s kingdom?” The disciples couldn’t believe what they were hearing, but Jesus kept on: “You can’t imagine how difficult. I’d say it’s easier for a camel to go through a needle’s eye than for the rich to get into God’s kingdom.”

²⁶ That set the disciples back on their heels. “Then who has any chance at all?” they asked.

²⁷ Jesus was blunt: “No chance at all if you think you can pull it off by yourself. Every chance in the world if you let God do it.”

²⁸ Peter tried another angle: “We left everything and followed you.”

^29-31 Jesus said, “Mark my words, no one who sacrifices house, brothers, sisters, mother, father, children, land—whatever—because of me and the Message will lose out. They’ll get it all back, but multiplied many times in homes, brothers, sisters, mothers, children, and land—but also in troubles. And then the bonus of eternal life! This is once again the Great Reversal: Many who are first will end up last, and the last first.”

¹⁷ Когда Иисус отправился дальше, к Нему подбежал один человек, пал перед Ним на колени и спросил:

– Благой Учитель! Что мне делать, чтобы наследовать вечную жизнь?

¹⁸ – Почему ты называешь Меня благим? – ответил Иисус. – Никто не благ, кроме одного Бога. ¹⁹ Ты знаешь заповеди: «Не убивай», «Не нарушай супружескую верность», «Не кради», «Не лжесвидетельствуй», «Не обманывай», «Почитай отца и мать»^[a].

²⁰ – Учитель, – сказал он, – все это я соблюдаю еще с дней моей юности.

²¹ Иисус, посмотрев на него, полюбил его и сказал:

– Одного тебе не хватает: пойди, продай то, что имеешь, и раздай деньги бедным, и тогда у тебя будет сокровище на небесах. Потом приходи и следуй за Мной.

²² Услышав это, человек помрачнел и ушел опечаленный, потому что он был очень богат. ²³ Оглядевшись вокруг, Иисус сказал ученикам:

– Как трудно богатым войти в Божье Царство!

²⁴ Ученики были поражены такими словами, но Иисус снова повторил им:

– Дети, как трудно надеющимся на богатство^[b] войти в Божье Царство! ²⁵ Легче верблюду пройти сквозь игольное ушко, чем богатому войти в Божье Царство.

²⁶ Ученики в крайнем изумлении говорили друг другу:

– Кто же тогда вообще может быть спасен?

²⁷ Иисус посмотрел на них и сказал:

– Людям это невозможно, но только не Богу, потому что все возможно Богу.

²⁸ Тогда Петр сказал Ему:

– Вот, мы все оставили и пошли за Тобой.

²⁹ Иисус ответил:

– Говорю вам истину: каждый, кто оставил дом или братьев, или сестер, или мать, или отца, или детей, или земли ради Меня и ради Радостной Вести, ³⁰ получит в этой жизни в сто раз больше и домов, и братьев, и сестер, и матерей, и детей, и земель, вместе с преследованиями, а в будущем веке он получит жизнь вечную. ³¹ Однако многие из тех, кто сейчас первые, станут последними, а последние – первыми.
