Psalms 20-21 -- The Voice

Psalm 20

For the worship leader. A song of David.

¹ May the Eternal’s answer find you, come to rescue you,
    when you desperately cling to the end of your rope.
May the name of the True God of Jacob be your shelter.
² May He extend hope and help to you from His holy sanctuary
    and support you from His sacred city of Zion.
³ May He remember all that you have offered Him;
    may your burnt sacrifices serve as a prelude to His mercy.

⁴ May He grant the dreams of your heart
    and see your plans through to the end.
⁵ When you win, we will not be silent! We will shout
    and raise high our banners in the great name of our God!
May the Eternal say yes to all your requests.

⁶ I don’t fear; I’m confident that help will come to the one anointed by the Eternal:
    heaven will respond to his plea;
    His mighty right hand will win the battle.
⁷ Many put their hope in chariots, others in horses,
    but we place our trust in the name of the Eternal One, our True God.
⁸ Soon our enemies will collapse and fall, never to return home;
    all the while, we will rise and stand firm.

⁹ Eternal One, grant victory to our king!
    Answer our plea for help.

Psalm 21

¹ The king is glad because You, O Eternal, are strong.
    In light of Your salvation, he is singing Your name.
² You have given him all he could wish for.
    After hearing his prayer, You withheld nothing.

³ True blessings You lavished upon the king;
    a crown of precious gold You placed upon his head.
⁴ His prayer was to live fully. You responded with even more—
    a never-ending life to enjoy.
⁵ With Your help, his fame and glory have grown;
    You raise him high and cover him in majesty.
⁶ You shower him with blessings that last forever;
    he finds joy in knowing Your presence and loving You.
⁷ For the king puts his trust in the Eternal,
    so he will not be shaken
    because of the persistent love of the Most High God.

⁸ King, your hand will reach for all your enemies;
    your right hand will seize all who hate you.
⁹ When you arrive at the battle’s edge,
    you will seem to them a furnace.
For the fire of the Eternal’s anger, the heat of His wrath
    will burn and consume them.
¹⁰ You will cut off their children,
    lop off the branches of their family tree.
The earth will never know them,
    nor will they ever be numbered among Adam’s kin.
¹¹ When they scheme against you,
    when they conspire their mischief, such efforts will be in vain.
¹² At the sight of you, they will sound the retreat;
    your bows, drawn back, will aim directly at their faces.

¹³ Put Your strength, Eternal One, on display for all to see;
    we will sing and make music of Your mighty power.

Evening

Psalm 110 -- The Voice

Psalm 110

A song of David.

Psalm 110 may have been written to celebrate the coronation of one of David’s sons as king. The Eternal invites the royal son of David to take his rightful place at His right hand, the place of power and authority—not just over Jerusalem but over his enemies as well. But the royal son is to be more than a king, he is to be a priest according the order of that mysterious and enigmatic figure, Melchizedek (Genesis 14:17-24). God promises to give this royal priest-king victory over his enemies as he marches out to war.

This psalm is the psalm most quoted by early Christian writers in the New Testament. As they considered the significance of Jesus, they found that this psalm, more than any, expressed their conviction that the risen Jesus now occupies a unique place at God’s right hand and will be victorious over His enemies.

¹ The Eternal said to my lord,
    “Sit here at My right hand,
    in the place of honor and power,
And I will gather your enemies together,
    lead them in on hands and knees;
    you will rest your feet on their backs.”

² The Eternal will extend your reach as you rule
    from your throne on Zion.
    You will be out in enemy lands, ruling.
³ Your people will come as volunteers that day; they will be a sight to see:
    on that day, you will lead your army, noble in their holiness.
As the new day dawns and dew settles on the grass,
    your young volunteers will make their way to you.
⁴ The Eternal has sworn an oath
    and cannot change His mind:
“You are a priest forever—
    in the honored order of Melchizedek.”

⁵ The lord is at Your right hand;
    on the day that his fury comes to its peak, he will crush kings.
⁶ You will see the dead in heaps at the roadside,
    corpses spread far and wide in valleys and on hillsides.
Rulers and military leaders will lie among them without distinction.
    This will be his judgment on the nations.
⁷ There is a brook along the way.
    He will stop there and drink;
And when he is finished,
    he will raise his head.

Psalm 116 -- The Voice

I love the Eternal; for not only does He hear
    my voice, my pleas for mercy,
² But He leaned down when I was in trouble and brought His ear close to me.
    So as long as I have breath, I will call on Him.
³ Once I was wound in the wrappings of death;
    the terror of dying and the grave had a grip on me;
    I could not get away, for I was entombed in distress and sorrow.
⁴ Then I called on the name of the Eternal:
    “O Eternal One—I am begging You—save me!”

⁵ The Eternal is full of grace and naturally just;
    our God is compassionate and merciful.
⁶ And the Eternal watches over the naive.
    Whenever I was knocked down, He reached down and saved me.
⁷ O my soul! Return and relax. Come to your true rest,
    for the Eternal has showered you with His favor.

⁸ God, You alone rescued my soul from the grips of death,
    my eyes from weeping,
    and my feet from slipping.
⁹ I will come before the Eternal
    as long as I journey in the land of the living.
¹⁰ I believed Your promise; therefore I spoke,
    “I am in deep trouble.”
¹¹ In my confusion I blurted out,
    “All people are liars!”

¹² How will I pay back the Eternal
    for all His graciousness toward me?
¹³ I will raise the cup of deliverance
    and call out the name of the Eternal.
¹⁴ I will fulfill the promises I made to Him
    here as a witness to all His people.

¹⁵ Precious in the eyes of the Eternal
    are the deaths of those who follow after Him.
¹⁶ O Eternal One, You know I am Your servant.
    I am Your servant, a child of Your maidservant, devoted to You;
    You have cut me loose from the chains of death that bind me.
¹⁷ And I come, eager to offer a sacrifice of gratitude
    and call on the name of the Eternal.
¹⁸ I will fulfill the promises I made to Him
    here as a witness to all His people
¹⁹ In the courts of the Eternal’s temple,
    among the people of God’s city, O Jerusalem.

Exodus 17:1-16 -- The Voice

The entire community of Israel traveled in stages out of the desert of Sin, just as the Eternal instructed. They camped at Rephidim, but there was no water there to quench their thirst.  

² Once again the people complained to Moses.

Israelites: Give us water to drink! We’re thirsty.

Moses: Why do you aim your complaints at me? Why are you testing the Eternal One?

³ But the people were so thirsty for water, they complained to Moses and leveled accusations against him.

Israelites: Why did you lead us out of Egypt? Was it to kill all of us—our children and livestock included—with this thirst?

⁴ Moses had had enough of their complaints, so he cried out to the Eternal One.

Moses: What am I supposed to do with these people and their relentless complaining? They are on the verge of stoning me.

Eternal One (to Moses): ⁵ Here’s what I want you to do: go on ahead of the people and take some of the elders of Israel with you. Also, be sure to bring your shepherd’s staff—the one with which you struck the Nile. ⁶ I will be there when you arrive standing at the rock of Horeb. I want you to strike the rock with your staff; and when you do, water will flow out of it so that everyone will have enough to drink.

The elders of Israel accompanied Moses and watched as he did what the Eternal directed.

⁷ Moses named the place Massah^[a] and Meribah,^[b] because the Israelites complained and tested the Eternal, saying, “Is He standing with us or not?”

⁸ While the Israelites were camped at Rephidim, soldiers of Amalek came and attacked them. ⁹ Moses called for a young leader named Joshua.

Moses (to Joshua): Select some of our best men, and go fight against the soldiers of Amalek. Tomorrow I will stand at the crest of that hill overlooking the battlefield with God’s staff in my hand.

¹⁰ Joshua did exactly as Moses had instructed him to do. He gathered the strongest men he could find and fought against the soldiers of Amalek. Meanwhile, Moses, Aaron, and Hur climbed to the top of the hill.

¹¹ It happened that whenever Moses raised his hand, the battle went well for Israel; but whenever he lowered his hand to rest, Amalek began to win. ¹² When Moses became too tired to hold his hands up any longer, Aaron and Hur took a stone and sat him down on it. Then both men stood beside Moses, one on each side, holding his hands up and keeping them steady until sunset.  

¹³ In the end, Joshua and the men of Israel defeated Amalek and his soldiers with the sword.

Eternal One (to Moses): ¹⁴ Write down what I say on a scroll as a memorial record of these events, and read it aloud so Joshua can hear: “I will erase all traces of the memory of Amalek from under heaven.”

¹⁵ Then Moses constructed an altar and called it, “The Eternal Is My Battle Flag.”

Moses: ¹⁶ Because Amalek raised a defiant hand against the throne of the Eternal, He has promised to wage war against Amalek through future generations.

Epistle

1 Peter 4:7-19 -- The Voice

We are coming to the end of all things, so be serious and keep your wits about you in order to pray more forcefully. ⁸ Most of all, love each other steadily and unselfishly, because love makes up for many faults. ⁹ Show hospitality to each other without complaint. ¹⁰ Use whatever gift you’ve received for the good of one another so that you can show yourselves to be good stewards of God’s grace in all its varieties. ¹¹ If you’re called upon to talk, speak as though God put the words in your mouth; if you’re called upon to serve others, serve as though you had the strength of God behind you. In these ways, God may be glorified in all you do through Jesus the Anointed, to whom belongs glory and power, now and forever. Amen.

¹² Dear ones, don’t be surprised when you experience your trial by fire. It is not something strange and unusual, ¹³ but it is something you should rejoice in. In it you share the Anointed’s sufferings, and you will be that much more joyful when His glory is revealed. ¹⁴ If anyone condemns you for following Jesus as the Anointed One, consider yourself blessed. The glorious Spirit of God rests on you. ¹⁵ But none of you should ever merit suffering like those who have murdered or stolen, meddled in the affairs of others or done evil things. ¹⁶ But if you should suffer for being a Christian, don’t think of it as a disgrace, as it would be if you had done wrong. Praise God that you’re permitted to carry this name.

People often suffer because of poor decisions that result in shame, but the people of God face persecution for their faithfulness that leads to honor and glory.

¹⁷ For the time for judgment has come, and it is beginning with the household of God. If it is starting with us, what will happen to those who have rejected God’s good news? ¹⁸ It is written in Proverbs,

If it is hard for the righteous ones to be saved,
    what will happen to the ungodly and the sinners?^[a]

¹⁹ So even if you should suffer now for doing God’s will, continue doing good and trust your futures to the judgment and mercy of a faithful Creator.

Gospel

John 16:16-33 -- The Voice

¹⁶ For a little while you will not see Me; but after that, a time will come when you will see Me again.

Some of His Disciples: ¹⁷ What does He mean? “I’ll be here, and then I won’t be here, because I’ll be with the Father”?

Other Disciples: ¹⁸ What is He saying? “A little while”? We don’t understand.

The promise of eternity is a reminder that God’s children are made for a renewed world. There is great comfort amid fear, knowing believers will be reunited with Jesus and joined with the Father. As believers labor together in this world—enduring pain, loss, and unfulfilled desires—they should be encouraged that in eternity all needs will be fulfilled in the presence of God.

¹⁹ Jesus knew they had questions to ask of Him, so He approached them.

Jesus: Are you trying to figure out what I mean when I say you will see Me in a little while? ²⁰ I tell you the truth, a time is approaching when you will weep and mourn while the world is celebrating. You will grieve, but that grief will give birth to great joy. ^21-22 In the same way that a woman labors in great pain during childbirth only to forget the intensity of the pain when she holds her child, when I return, your labored grief will also change into a joy that cannot be stolen.

²³ When all this transpires, you will finally have the answers you have been seeking. I tell you the truth, anything you ask of the Father in My name, He will give to you. ²⁴ Until this moment, you have not sought after anything in My name. Ask and you will receive so that you will be filled with joy.

²⁵ I have been teaching you all of these truths through stories and metaphors, but the time is coming for Me to speak openly and directly of the Father.

²⁶ The day is coming when you will make a request in My name, but I will not represent you before the Father. ²⁷ You will be heard directly by the Father. The Father loves you because you love Me and know that I come from the Father. ²⁸ I came from the Father into the cosmos, but soon I will leave it and return to the Father.

All His disciples mourn Jesus’ refusal to take His rightful place as a king and lead a revolution. Jesus knows political might, brute force, and earthly governments are not helpful tools in a battle for hearts. Spiritual revolutions are subversive. They are led by defiant acts of love (for example, healing, foot washing, and martyrdom). Laws do not change hearts, and violence induces hatred and fear. But a sincere community of faith in which love and hope are demonstrated even in the darkest hours will lead a spiritual revolution. It is time to go forward with open eyes and continue to labor as Christian citizens, placing hope only in the redemptive work of the gospel.

Disciples: ²⁹ We hear You speaking clearly and not in metaphors. How could we misunderstand?  

³⁰ We see now that You are aware of everything and You reveal things at the proper time. So we do not need to question You, because we believe You have come from God.

Jesus: ³¹ So you believe now? ³² Be aware that a time is coming when you will be scattered like seeds. You will return to your own way, and I will be left alone. But I will not be alone, because the Father will be with Me. ³³ I have told you these things so that you will be whole and at peace. In this world, you will be plagued with times of trouble, but you need not fear; I have triumphed over this corrupt world order.

Пройдет немного времени, и вы Меня уже не увидите, но пройдет еще немного времени, и вы опять увидите Меня.

«Скорбь ваша обратится в радость»

¹⁷ Некоторые из Его учеников стали говорить друг другу:

– Что это Он имеет в виду, когда говорит: «Пройдет немного времени, и вы Меня уже не увидите, но пройдет еще немного времени, и вы опять увидите Меня» и «Я ухожу к Отцу»? – ¹⁸ Они спрашивали: – Что Он хочет сказать, говоря: «немного времени»? Мы не понимаем, о чем Он говорит.

¹⁹ Иисус понял, что они хотели спросить Его об этом, и сказал:

– Вы спрашиваете друг друга, почему Я сказал: «Пройдет немного времени, и вы Меня уже не увидите, но пройдет еще немного времени, и вы опять увидите Меня»?  

²⁰ Говорю вам истину, вы будете плакать и рыдать в то время, когда мир будет радоваться. Вы будете скорбеть, но скорбь ваша обратится в радость. ²¹ Когда женщине подходит время родить, у нее начинаются боли, но как только ребенок родится, она забывает боль от радости, что в мир родился человек! ²² Так и с вами, сейчас у вас время скорби, но когда Я снова вас увижу и вы обрадуетесь, никто больше уже не отнимет вашей радости. ²³ Тогда вы не будете спрашивать Меня ни о чем. Говорю вам истину: Отец даст вам все, что вы ни попросите у Него во Имя Мое.  

²⁴ Пока вы во Имя Мое не просили ничего. Просите и получите, чтобы ваша радость была совершенной.

Победа над миром

²⁵ – Я говорил вам притчами, но наступает время, когда Я не буду говорить притчами, а скажу вам прямо об Отце. ²⁶ В тот день вы будете просить во Имя Мое. Я не говорю вам, что Я буду просить Отца о вас, ²⁷ потому что Отец Сам любит вас. Он любит вас, потому что вы полюбили Меня и поверили, что Я пришел от Бога. ²⁸ Я пришел в мир от Отца, и сейчас Я покидаю этот мир и ухожу к Отцу.

²⁹ Тогда ученики Иисуса сказали:

– Сейчас Ты говоришь ясно, без притч. ³⁰ Сейчас мы понимаем, что Ты знаешь все, и у Тебя есть ответ даже до того, как Тебя спросят, и поэтому мы верим, что Ты пришел от Бога.

³¹ – Теперь вы верите? – сказал Иисус. ³² – Наступает такое время, и уже наступило, когда все вы разбежитесь по домам и оставите Меня одного. Но Я не один, потому что со Мной Отец. ³³ Я сказал вам все это, чтобы вы нашли во Мне мир. В этом мире вас ожидают невзгоды, но будьте мужественны! Я победил этот мир!
